Gerasimov Valery Vasilyevitch was born in September 8th, 1955 in the city of Kazan. In 1977 he graduated from the Kazan Higher Tank Command School n.a. the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Tatar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (ASSR). He commanded a platoon, company, battalion in the Northern Force Command in the Eastern Military District.
After his graduation from the Military Academy of the Armored Forces n.a. Marshal of the Soviet Union Malinovsky in the year of 1987, he served as Chief of Staff and Commander of a tank regiment, Chief of Staff of Motorized Rifle Division in the Baltic Military District. From 1993-1995 — he served as Commander of Motorized Infantry Division in North-Western Force Command.
In 1997 he graduated from the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, and later he served as First Deputy Army Commander in Moscow Military District, Deputy Commander of Chief of Staff and Commander of the 58th Army in the North Caucasus Military District.
From 2003-2005 — he served as Chief of Staff of the Eastern Military District. From 2005 — he served as Head of Training Operations and Troop Service of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, from December 2006 - he served as Chief of Staff of the North Caucasus Military District.
In December 2006, he became Commander of Leningrad Military District, in February 2009 — he served as Commander of Moscow Military District.
By Presidential Edict, December 23rd, 2010 he was assigned to a position of Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.
By Presidential Edict, April 26th, 2012 he was assigned to a position of Commander of the Central Military District.
He was decorated with the order of «Military Merit», the order of «Merit for Motherland«, 4th grade «Merit for Motherland in the USSR Armed Forces», 3rd grade and a number medals.
